Mine Forfædres Kodeks

Ni Nobel Dyder

My ancestors from Denmark lived by a very strict code that would be adapted and adopted by many different groups throughout the millennia as they embodied the “warrior” culture that the Germanic Danes brought to the world. While many might conclude that the Vikings were above any type of rules or order, reality says quite the contrary. My ancestors operated and joined together under a fairly rigid code of conduct that all members would have had to obey. Remember, violations of these codes would have meant that they were designated as outlaws or níðingar, and would have been condemned those to the ugly side of Hel, swimming in a river of poison for eternity (or until Ragnoräk).

Nine Nobel Virtues

  • Courage
  • Truth
  • Honor
  • Fidelity
  • Discipline
  • Hospitality
  • Industriousness
  • Self-Reliance
  • Perseverance

However, the ancestors believed it was “honor and truth above all else”, or “ære (menskr) of sandhed frem for alt andet”. While each Viking warrior was expected to maintain these nine virtues throughout their lifetime, so too did the average citizen living within a Dane “Viking” community. While all able-bodied men were expected to be warriors, they too tended the fields and livestock for the community as well.
