Mental health is all about perspective.

All too often, our physical minds get swept up on the pressures of the moment, drilling down to the micro to fight the ongoing battles of everyday, we forget to step back from our front lines to ensure we are using the best strategy to accomplish our objectives. Many of us here stories on how millionaires and retirees lose track of time and just have a lot less stress in their everyday lives. This is true, but not for the reason many believe.
When we are fighting the everyday battles of bills, deadlines, traffic jams, and sometimes challenging relationships at a lot of levels, we have a tendency to become laser focused on getting everything at-least addressed, if not solved. But often times, this type of focus leads us from battle to battle without any real “us time” in between. Getting kiddos home from school, getting them fed, then off to some extracurricular activity. Everyone’s solution is “time management”, or my personal favorite “work smarter, not harder”. Although this is a tool that can be used, it is not the overall mental health solution we really need.
Our brains are wired to “stay in the fight as long as it takes” which means, even if we are drawn away from that battle to another, our minds are still focused on solving the previous battles. Which means now we are storing stresses, without a potential way to implement our devised solution. What we really need is a break. Taking a cue from my great grandmother, who used to say “why don’t you sleep on it, then see what tomorrow looks like” is probably the best answer to solving our never-ending mental battles.
When we step away from the battle, back up a few paces, we are more opt to gain a different perspective to a solution than what we could see entrenched in winning the battle. A mental “break” if you will. By pausing the rush of the battle, stepping back and looking at the problem from a different perspective, we have the probability to see a method to accomplish more with less. So, taking a five minute break every now and then to consider parking our butts on a beach somewhere with a stiff drink in one hand, and our beloved family off to the side, we have an option that can provide us with the answers we need.
Meditation is a great way to discard the high-energy of trench warfare, and step up to higher ground within the mind to accomplish the obtainment of a better strategy of winning the day. Remember, its all about the way we look at the world, that is the way the world will look.
