As we seek to understand the influences that we have experienced, as well as the experiences we’ve yet to have, we search for an answer as to what force we must keep in reserve to help us on our path toward our destiny. To visualize these influences and counter-energies, we will call upon the layout of the “four winds” that we may learn of our adversaries and allies in our mental battle for safety.

Ansuz- “It could mean open paths of communication, intellect, transformation, synthesis, word-power, or divine inspiration.”

Present Influences

Berkano – “It could mean, secrets, sanctuary, liberation, shelter, life changes, becoming, and birth.”

Future Influences

Algiz – “It could mean protection, higher life, awakenings, or connection to the gods.”

Hagalaz  – “It could mean an inner harmony, completion, corrections, controlled crisis, changes for the long-term good, change according to ideals.”

Each morning, I engage in prayer, or communion with my gods. Each day they offer me wisdom and knowledge, and in return I offer them myself that they may do with me that which they need to. I have felt the gods manage my engagements throughout the years, and especially lately, engaging me in a multitude of ways. Today, I offer to you that which was told to me by the gods in this morning’s prayers. 

To reveal the influences of our past, we have drawn Ansuz. Today, Ansuz speaks of our mental stability. It tells us that the lessons that we have struggled within the past are now coming to fruition in that we are beginning to recognize the self-confidence that is beginning its bloom. Our evolution from our past brings forth an understanding of open lines of communications, receiving intellect, and most importantly, the power of transformation. Today we are certainly receiving divine inspiration as we move closer to our destiny.

Our present influence is that of Berkano. Today, Berkano ensures that we have laid a solid foundation for the intellect within us to mature soundly. The rune reveals that we are best to learn and grow in silence and secrecy, for we may not yet be ready to face the negativity of those “naysayers” of the world. However, Berkano is the rune of new beginnings and birth, so you are now entering a new phase of your life where this mature wisdom that you have been cultivating has taken to seed, and initiated its growth.

To reveal our future influences, we have drawn Algiz, and today it is offering a reminder to focus on the skill of listening. Much like the art of listening with one’s ears, we must remember to listen to one’s heart. In the truest form of communication, we are not “waiting to retort”, but truly engaging in hearing the sounds, and processing the understanding as to what the speaker truly said. Pushing away the interpretations through our own emotional filters, we search for the true meaning of what is conveyed. So too must we remember to use this same process when listening with our heart.

While typically Hagal surrounded himself with the chaos of a dramatic life, he also understood the balance of order. So too must we, as we move forward in our existences, Hagalaz is typically indicative of inner harmony, completion, and controlled crisis, keeping in mind that the alterations to our understanding are for the long-term good, and that these changes do align with the intrinsic ideas you had arriving at this point.
