The power of the elements.

It would be during the dawn of civilization that the four elements of existence would be identified, originally by the Greek philosopher Empedocles around 490-430 BC, who would refer to them as the “roots”. Plato, who would live afterwards, may have been the first to declare them as elements. However, as the physical realm encountered experience after experience, it became clear that these four elements would come to frame much of what we know about our existence, for life here on Midgard is impossible without the proper amounts of three of these, water, air, and earth. Before we delve into the fourth element, lets identify some of the magical properties of each of these three first.
Everyone is familiar with the first, water. According to Dr. Mitchell around the modern year 1945 he says that our physical form is made up of about 60% water, with percentages ranging +/- of that. That means that a 200-pound man is about 120 pounds of water, or about 15 gallons of water. Therein lies the body’s need to consume water throughout the day, particularly on extreme highs, or low temperatures. I think its safe to say that water offers us life-giving forces beyond what we can do ourselves, therefore it truly is one of the primary elements of life here on Earth.
Next up is air. In much the same way the body needs to consume water, so too does it need air to breath. Not just any air, but air clean enough to support our cells as the oxygen is passed through our bloodstream to the many places that require it. Interrupt that delivery and physiological issues arise with the physical form. Thereby meaning its necessary for our existence, making it a solid second necessary element. But air does so much more for us as well, as it creates another magical phenomenon, weather. This magic brings rain, snow, hail, and other systems that help the earth maintain her balance.
Our last of the big three is earth. Now the earth has many amazing superpowers that should be considered as to its importance here, but I think we can all agree, it provides a place in which to stand. It provides the nutrient catching ability that allows it to become fertile to grow the plant that reside here on the planet with us. Ultimately, with the gravitational pull from mother Earth, without the earth, we would be pulled to the lava core, making our life’s experiences fairly short lived. The earth absorbs much of the universal energies, thereby allowing those following those energy streams, to have a reprieve sometimes.
Ok, so, among these life sustaining elements that we have listed within the first three, where does the fire come in? Great question. Fire is the element of change; it possesses the energy necessary to alter the other three into a different state of existence. Turning earth to charcoal, water to steam, and consuming the air for some of its fuel, it is the catalyst for change. This is the magical property of this fourth element. As we know, existence is all about change, as all life must transition between stages of its growth, fire is the element to promote this.
With all this in mind, what do these four elements have to do with the magic of the universe? Another great question. Let’s look at what each brings to the table with its magical uses. Starting with water, we know that life cannot exist without it, therefore it offers us existence beyond what is in front of us, longevity is you will. However, it is fluid and can wash things away to start anew, or remove the negative energies as it is a decent conductor of energies, transported energies across its surface for great distances, either to or from you.
Air is the easy one, as its always getting in the way anyway, however, it extends from where we are to the ridges that the gods rest upon. With no barriers, the air in the sky above us can transport energies around the globe, offering us a transport medium for any spells cast, or energies transferred through it. While not as good a conductor as water, it can carry some states much further than anything else, as smoke travels further through the air than any other element.
Earth is the ground. No pun intended. The earth provides a grounding for unwanted energies that may complicate whatever we are trying to do with the transfer of energies through some form of magic. But it does so much more. The earth provides a way for many of the negative energies here on Midgard to be absorbed and dissipated through the soil beneath our feet. As importantly, it consumes this negative energy, converts it back to neutral, then passes it to all the life forms upon the surface. So earth represents the grounding, or dissipation of negative energies, a cleansing you might say.
Finally, we come to the magic properties of fire. Fire possesses a lot of different energies, but remember its first role in the universe is that of change. It is a monster state change agent here on the planet, allowing life to continue to change and grow in the necessary way. Remember, it is wasn’t for fire, our brains would have never expanded beyond that of the first bipedal humans. It was the fire that allowed for the preparation of the certain foods, that among many other things, released certain proteins into those early humans to begin the mass creation of the synapses that comprise our brains today. Fire was that change agent.
I find that incorporating all of these elements into my magic allows for a better chance at my desired outcome as they possess many different methods at which to break down the energies that may attempt to prevent the successful completion of my spells. As you are growing into your spiritual understanding, I would encourage you to gather these items around you and include them in your magical practice.
Hopefully, this somehow helped you along your journey.
